The 'mattress' that comes with it is not particularly comfortable and I imagine that this helped with making it a bit easier to sleep on. It washed well and while it did shrink a bit that was good as initially it was a bit big. So once washed it fit nicely. I purchased this for the Pack and Play and I am glad that I did.
